Tangerine Pie

Whilst in Blackpool the pie took time to visit Bloomfield Road home of…Blackpool FC.

The seasiders was once the home to some of this countries finest footballers including Sir Stanley Matthews, Stan Mortensen, Jimmy Armfield and old squeaky voice himself, Alan ( I’m a world cup winner) Ball…..Them wert daays!!!!

Little known fact, one time ex- Blackpool manager and Greyhound owner Percy Gladstone was once married to former pin up girl Marilyn Monroe! Bloomfield Road is also where Blackpool’s famous Donkey’s live, for a small fee you can see them every other Saturday on the pitch……Superb!!

Bloomfield Road is currently undergoing a major face lift, with the ground being totally rebuilt….jolly good it looks to!

Pie the Seaside

Feeling a little jaded from all the travelling, the Pie fancied a weekend break, and so visited Europe’s number one seaside destination and world’s largest toilet….….Blackpool! Over 14 Billion people (mainly Glaswegians) visit the resort every year and as many as 4 million “kiss me quick” hats are sold every day….unbelievable!

The Pie is pictured alongside famous local landmark Blackpool tower, standing a whopping 8ft tall the tower is constructed entirely from rubber. On a clear day the tower can be seen from as far away as China…..amazing!

Other famous Blackpool attractions include The Pleasure Beech, Sand Castle, Winter Gardens and the Taj Mahal. Every September a Z list celebrity is invited to switch on the world famous illuminations. Stretching the whole of the Golden mile and using over 46 light bulbs, the illuminations are considered the unofficial eighth wonder of the world…….tremendous!

Pie Drops in at Preston North End FC

The pie took time to visit League One high fliers Preston North End, home of legendary footballer and all-round nice bloke Sir Tom Finney. Other famous ex players include Bill Shankly, Tommy Docherty and Diego Maradonna. Preston were founder members of the English Football League in 1888 and were the first English football champions.

Former managers include, to name but a few, Sam Allardyce, John (mad dog) Beck, David Moyes and Sammy Davies Jnr.

North End play their home games at Deepdale which is currently being refurbished, three of the four stands have been replaced by new all seated structures named after famous players, Bill Shankly, Tom Finney & Alan Kelly. The fourth 'Pavilion' stand is due to be demolislished and rebuilt, it will be named after local street cleaner Albert Bigsocks.

Educational Pie Visit

Keen to broaden its footballing knowledge the pie visited the National Football Museum in sunny Preston. The museum has many exhibits including the ball used in the 1966 World Cup Final when England thrashed Wales. It also houses a trophy which was once actually won by Manchester City……..Stunning!!

At the museum you can also see historic items relating to all things football. Memorabilia and photographs, medals plus loads more of fantastic items.

Preston is the country’s newest city. Granted city status by the Queen in 2002, the city celebrated by throwing a free open air party for all it’s residents, sadly no one turned up……..Shame!!

Preston is currently building its very own airport which will be bigger than the City itself …..Wicked!!!

Admission to the National Football Museum is free!! So go visit. Check out the website for more details.

The Pie Trotters off to Bolton

Bolton play at the fantastic Reebok Stadium which has been their home since 1997, so the Pie thought it would take a look around. The Bolton Wanderers club badge shows the initials of the club in the shape of a ball, with red and blue ribbons beneath. The ribbons controversially replaced the red rose of Lancashire following the club's move to the Reebok….traitors!

The site of the old Burnden Park ground is now home to Englands first terroist training camp, weekends start from just £50.

Wanderers’ mascot is an 8ft Lion called Lofty, named after the Eastenders character, the hapless "Lofty" Holloway who went on to marry miserable Michelle Fowler.

Top celebrity fans include former Blue Peter presenter Stu (“ooh I could crush a grape”) Francis, DJ and Telly man Vernon (“I’m from Bolton”) Kay and local entrepreneur and average 5-a-side footballer Gareth Cooke.

The Pie continues it's journey next week with a visit to some fantastic new places....be sure to check back to see where the pie ends up next!
